You owe me nothing. I did it out of love
Some of us have this habit of keeping track of everything we do for the people we love. The calls we picked up, the messages we replied to even when we were tired, the plans we changed, the little things we remembered, the times we stayed when leaving would have been easier. We remember all of it, even when we pretend we don't.
And then one day, when things change, we start counting.
I did this for you. I was there for you. I chose you. I cared about you.Suddenly something that once felt so genuine starts feeling like a debt that was never repaid. But I don't want to love people like that.
If I sat with you for hours because I wanted to hear what was going on in your head, those hours were mine to give. If I remembered the tiny things you told me, it was because they mattered to me. If I showed up when you needed someone, I showed up with my whole heart.
I don't want to take those things back just because life didn't turn out the way I thought it would.
There will be people who receive parts of us they never fully understand. They might never know how much thought went into a small gesture, how many times we chose them without announcing it, or how much love existed in things that looked completely ordinary.
Love doesn't always need an equal exchange. You can care deeply for someone and still understand that they may never care for you in the same way. You can give someone beautiful pieces of your life and eventually walk away without turning those pieces into evidence against them.
Of course it hurts when you realise you were giving more. Of course you wish certain people had stayed, understood, or loved you a little better. That doesn't erase the love that existed while it lasted.
I want to remember what I gave without feeling foolish for giving it.
I want to look back and know that I was sincere. That I cared when I cared. That I showed up when I wanted to show up. That my love was never a bargain waiting for its return.
So if you ever look back and wonder what you owe me for all the things I did......
you owe me nothing.
I did it out of love.
And I believe there is something beautiful about leaving it there.
