God has funny ways of telling us to slow down.
It might be a rainy afternoon that appears out of nowhere and ruins the plans you had for the day. Sometimes it's a cup of coffee that takes longer to finish because you got distracted watching the rain outside the window. Sometimes it's an old song playing in the background while the smell of freshly washed clothes drifts in from another room. Sometimes it's a power cut that sends everyone out to the veranda. Sometimes it's a conversation that was supposed to last five minutes and somehow stretches into an hour.
Most of the time, we're too busy living a few steps ahead of ourselves to notice any of it.
We're worrying about next week while today's coffee is getting cold. Thinking about next year while the sky outside is turning the prettiest shade of grey. Trying to solve problems that haven't happened yet while someone in the kitchen is laughing at a story we'll wish we remembered years later.
And then something interrupts the rush.
Just enough to make us pause.
Long enough to notice the rain hitting the terrace wall. The comfort of familiar voices in the next room. A favourite song reaching its best part. The first sip of coffee before the rest of the house wakes up. The way freshly washed bedsheets somehow make life feel more hopeful than it did yesterday.
I think that's the funny part.
The things that slow us down often look ordinary while they're happening.
They don't feel life-changing. They don't arrive with a lesson attached to them.
They just remind us that life is not only happening in the future we've been worrying about. It's happening here too. In rainy afternoons. In kitchen conversations. In half-watched shows. In cups of coffee. In all the small moments we keep promising ourselves we'll appreciate later.
Maybe God knows that if He asked us politely to slow down, we'd say "after this week" or "after this semester" or "once I figure everything out."
So instead, He hides the reminder in ordinary things.
A pause.
A delay.
A rainy afternoon.
A reason to sit still for a little while.🤍☕🌧️
