Parle G and Paanch baje

5pm is not a time. Saara mood hi shift kar detha hai.

Like suddenly the day stops being serious. The sun is not harsh anymore, not lazy either ....just perfectly dramatic. Thoda sa golden, thoda sa orange, like it knows it’s the main character of the sky. Buildings look prettier, even the boring ones. Roads glow. People glow.

5pm feels like exhale.

It’s when the world is in transition. Office log rushing home. College/School students dragging their bags but smiling because classes are over. Auto walas bargaining loudly. Kids playing cricket in gali shouting “last over yaar.” There’s this background noise ....it's something that just feels alive.

And then at home… chai time.

Kitchen mein adrak wali chai ki smell. Gas ka halka sa sound. Steel cups clinking. Parle G ka packet khulta hai with that tiny crackle sound. You dip the biscuit thoda zyada and it almost falls in the cup but you save it at the last second. Victory.

Balcony ya terrace pe khade hoke sky dekhna at 5pm hits different. The sky doesn’t look blue-blue. It looks painted. Like someone blended orange, peach, and thoda sa pink with their fingers. And wind bhi alag hoti hai. Not afternoon garmi wind. Proper shaam ki hawa. Light breeze touching your hair like it’s gossiping with you.

5pm is when I feel most like myself.

Not morning productive girl. Not night overthinking girl. Just… existing.

Sometimes I take my coffee to the terrace instead of chai. Sometimes I call my parents. Sometimes I just stand there doing nothing. Watching birds fly back. Watching aunties watering plants. Watching someone hang clothes on the terrace. Normal things.....everything looks cinematic.

Even my mehendi looks better at 5pm. The stain looks darker in golden light. Nail paint shines more.

There’s also this feeling of comfort at 5pm. Like whatever happened during the day .... boring lectures, awkward conversations, random thoughts .... it doesn’t feel heavy anymore. The sun makes it lighter. Jaise bol raha ho, “chill, kal dekh lenge.”

It’s also snack time. Not proper dinner. Not proper hunger. Just thoda sa something. Chai, coffee, biscuits, maybe leftover samosa. That in-between comfort.

And the best part? Everyone is going somewhere. There’s movement everywhere. But I don’t feel rushed. I feel like I’m watching life happen from the perfect seat.

5pm is desi main character energy.

No background music. Just pressure cooker whistles in distance. Scooty sounds. Temple bell somewhere far. Azan echoing softly. People laughing. Dogs barking. Sky glowing.

It’s simple. But it feels rich.

If my life ever becomes too confusing, too comparison-heavy ...I think I’ll always come back to 5pm. Terrace. Chai. Orange sky. Parle G.

Bas.

And honestly? If someone asked me what peace looks like, I won’t show them a beach in Europe.

I’ll show them India ka 5pm.
